We all like to visit the winners circle during their career, but we must also want our beloved “children” to have a happy and productive second career. Horses, like most people, often do not do retirement well. They come to us off the track with sharp minds, highly conditioned bodies and an incredible work ethic. Boredom is their worst enemy. Quick minds and the need for excitement help in making the reconditioning process from track life to a new discipline quicker and much simpler than most think.

The exciting sport of reining is a great fit for retired Arabian racehorses. Their competitiveness is quickly refocused from the continuous oval to a different style of interaction with their trainer/rider in learning this new discipline. The confidence, spirit and heart of the Arabian racehorse lends well to showing in the reining class. The excitement of the crowd, the lights, the clanging gate with mandatory loud bell, and the thundering hoofs of competitors have seemingly prepared the retired racehorse for the energy of the show ring. Blue Viking and Blew By You are both retired racehorses and both showed very well in reining classes at Scottsdale 2006. The current availability of racing stock is a key element for reining. How awesome is it to have the whole package... looks, brains, talent, strength - the works!

Cutting, working cow, western pleasure and dressage are but a few other options, though endurance competitors have traditionally been a good resale market for retired racehorses. Their uses are limitless -- if we believe they can do it, they can!! Arabians usually do not read the books and magazines that often discount them as anything but show horses. Versatile and athletic they just press on making Owners proud to claim them as their own.
