Create-A-Foal

Rancho Milagro Yegua offers you the ability to create a foal of your choice by purchasing an egg, or ovum, from one of our stakes winning or stakes producing mares. You simply purchase the ovum and furnish the semen of the stallion of your choice. We also offer the embryo transfer services, whether using one of our recipient mares or yours, to facilitate this procedure. Our intent is to offer some of our “super” mares to add new bloodlines to your herd. Since these mares are not for sale, it is the next best thing. Below is more detail information of this procedure:

Embryo transfer is the procedure for collecting a fertilized ovum (embryo) from a donor mare and transferring it to the reproductive tract of a recipient mare with synchronized ovulation. The embryo is removed from the uterus of a donor mare and transferred to the uterus of a recipient mare.

The ET procedure begins with the synchronization of ovulation between the two mares which is normally chemically induced. The uterus of the donor mare is flushed 7 to 8 days after ovulation, and the retrieved embryo is transferred into the uterus of the recipient mare. This is done as a non-surgical procedure - it is like a regular flush done before breeding, but the flush media is captured in a special container to recover the embryo. The retrieved embryo is then inserted into the recipient mare in a procedure much like artificial insemination.

A recipient mare should be relatively young (i.e. 3 to 12 years of age), exhibit normal reproductive cycles and have no history of reproductive problems. The receipt mare should be at least as large or slightly larger than the donor mare. The receipt mare can be of any breed. The DNA of the embryo has already been established at the time of fertility of the ovum while still in the donor.

Once the receipt mare has been selected, hormones are used to synchronize ovulation of the donor and the receipt - called superovulation. After the flush, the embryo can be shipped to another location while still in the flush media - it is prepared much like cooled semen and shipped in equitainers. This allows the purchaser the option of using their own fertility veterinary facilities who have large numbers of receipt mares available. This is very time sensitive. Although the technologies are available to freeze these embryos, the cryopreservation of equine embryos has not been very successful. So in the event you wish to ship the embryo to another location, cooled in an equitainer is your better option.

This is a rather simplified overview of the process and we would be glad to discuss it further if you have any questions, please feel free to call.

The following price list is to give you an example of the costs you may incur. Prices depend on the number of ultrasounds needed, if the pregnancy takes in the donor, if the pregnancy takes in the receipt, etc… this information is provided only as a guideline. Additionally, there are boarding expenses for the receipt before and after the procedure. Your receipt mare can travel after 35 days checked in foal.
